Title: Lamkin's gambit: 5 in a row after 9 moves
Post by: Lamkin on November 19, 2009, 06:07:14 am
I've discovered a pattern for the Gomoku game....I've found a way to beat the computer each and every single time (using only nine moves) as long as I follow a set series of moves. And, after the random placement of its first piece, the computer has placed each of its subsequent pieces according to a set pattern—there has never once been any variation.
Screenshots below show where you'll need to place your pieces.

And it works thanks Lamkin!!

it is indeed a problem for me.

@ lamkin:

how did you figure out the technique?
was it just a case where you would:
1)place your first piece in a certain place.
2)see where the opponent places his next piece.
3)quit
4)repeat steps 1 and 2 to see if he placed his 2nd piece in the same place as before?

that's the only way i can see how it could be done.

i realise that it couldn't be unbeatable, but 9 times out of ten my matches end with stalemate.
all the areas on the board completely filled.

i should mention that i have quite mild dyslexia (which could impede some of my progress!).
the other factor is that some people who attempt these puzzles are just not "wired" that way.
i've witnessed some people claiming others are "not using their brain", and their "little sister can do it in ten attempts".
i try my best to not let this arrogant/egotistical attitude get me down but...
at the end of the day, some of us find it more difficult to visualise the same solutions to problems that others do.

EDIT:

i done it (using someone else's technique of placing 3 in a row before the computer decided to stop you.
i alternated between doing that and performing the obligatory defensive moves, and it became much easier.

i think one of the reasons that i never thought to do 3-in-a-row all the time was because i must have thought "he'll just see that a mile away, what's the point?"

i also thought that i would have to forfeit the nuts i had just one, if i decided to play another game (for practice) and then lose it!

thank god that this was not the case :0

Eh, it's been so long that I can't remember. :/

I'm having a problem with this game.(the android version)

This trick doesn't work. And no matter what I do, that robot guy always defeats me.

He always starts from a different spot, and I want to continue with the trick he does moves which force me to block him and the whole thing is ruined.

I don't think that there's any trick or tactic for the android version of this.
You have to be just lucky I guess.

Yeah, the gambit doesn't work on iOS, either. I've tried to find another pattern, but nothing works so far. :/

I guess there's not a pattern.
The opponent always starts at a different spot and keeps blocking you.
I luckily won today after 20+ tries.

I managed to trick him by doing what he almost always does to me.

Someone posted ~ an interesting solution (http://forum.amanita-design.net/index.php?topic=4136.msg14974#msg14974) ~ to the 5 in a row puzzle on The Android Version of Machinarium in which you use another computer to help you solve the puzzle.

Give it a try and let us know how you do.

I tried your solution, but my board never looks like your pictures. The computer puts pieces in many different spots. Even the first screen shot is not what comes up in my game version. Just letting you know. :)

Well, it's been mentioned that the solution will not work on the Android or iOS version, but it should always work on the PC version. Perhaps what's confusing is that...yes, the computer will place its first piece in different spots on that grid, but it will still begin to follow the pattern regardless as long as you place your first piece directly above its first piece; your second piece to the immediate left of its first piece, etc. Hope that makes sense.
