Title: Machinarium on Vinyl?
Post by: floex on November 26, 2009, 12:39:02 am
hallo,

we are having idea to release machinarium on vinyl. we think it could be nice as the mood of both game and soundtrack is kind of dusty, rusty, vintage. for me it just perfectly fits to the machinarium concept..

the idea is really not about money making as it should be very limited edition.
that's why i decided to ask here on the forum if anybody likes this idea and would be actually interested to buy it!

please let us know!

Hi floex,

I would absolutely want to buy the soundtrack on vinyl. Agree with you 100% that it is perfectly suited to that format.
It is a masterpiece!

if the price is reasonable, definately for sure. (i know limited vinyl runs are expensive by nature though.)

I don't buy digital music (and I have the steam version so no soundtrack for me), so this would be great.

If you want it really rusty you could get it handmade, but that would probably push the costs way up.

thank you for your replies! i really appreciate it.
so we have already decided to go for it .-D
the soundtrack will be released on one independent label focusing on ambient / alternative music here in prague.
they are focusing just on vinyl releases and they have really nice catalog!
also it should be really good quality print. the same factory where eg. ECM is pressing its plates...

it will take some time thought
for sure not before christmas

Well then I'd like to toss out this idea for you to think about, Tomas:

How about making it a double LP release?  That way all those tracks that your fans have been pestering you about, "The Didgeridoo Band", "The Elevator Love Theme", etc. could finally be freed from their "loop status" and flushed out into complete compositions!

Also, if it were one of those good old fold-out double LPs there would be more room to print Machinarium artwork onto the added album cover surface area.

Post by: divit on November 29, 2009, 12:14:21 pm
Even if you're only going for a single LP release you could give it a fold out sleeve, and then fill the other sleeve with an artbook or something similar.
Actually could you make an artbook anyway? (unless there already is one)

I really like your music , reminds me of early Orb/Alex Paterson stuff ... electronica with soul :)

Whenever you have a friend with kit like the above, it is customary and polite to take an old dance 12" with you and perform an impromptu scratching session by way of greeting. All the better if they buy two...

As vinyl is an uncompressed format by nature, you'll have what you seek. And plus, you'll win texture. However, you can easily hear the difference between a mp3 and a CD, but it becomes pretty difficult when it comes to digital dematerialized formats, and the reason is translation. Because if you're not pro, you can't burn it right (real music CD are pressed, not burned, burning is full of errors), your computer, even with great sound cards, is not designed for playback, only for making and monitoring (except maybe some really rare cases, but the main reason is the presence of a complex OS in the process, it ca't be good for neutrality). And Digital to Analog Converters are for now difficult things to find, and a dark market. That's why I'm CD only for music (but I use iTunes for songs ^^).
So yeah, a lossless would be a good idea, even if right now it's not really exploitable. Still, mp3 is not a very good quality format... and if your computer have a decent audio output, and you have $100+ headphones, you'll hear a difference. Or at least, be able to. Many people can hear things but don't pay attention to.

As for the vinyl, if I wasn't on the go for a huge trip, I would buy it. Warmth of this media is soooo good. I hope you'll use an incredible art for the cover, full of rust. Like in the old days :)

Through my sennheiser hd 600's I don't hear the difference between a 320 mp3 and an apple lossless @ 950 cvr (both Pay No Mind from Floex's album Pocustone). Only a really miniscule difference if I go down to 256 mp3, which is what I have Machinarium in, but I'm sure there's a higher quality version somewhere.

If you're going for vinyl because of its sound could there be a cassette release too? It has its own unique distortions as it warps, something I really like.

That's why I'm CD only for music (but I use iTunes for songs ^^).

Score!  ;D

1. CD-R burning have CRC, it's bit-perfect (if you want it to be, and you've mastered the track for the CD). Going from CD to FLAC to CD again I haven't got any experience with, but I'm sure you'll be hard pressed to find any audible problems. And, lets be honest, MP3's, if high enough bitrate has been used, is just fine for listening. Although, in a perfect world, everyone uses FLAC.
2. PC's can be made for playback. Just like any other studio gear out there. The OS doesn't enter into it. PCM isn't all that hard, and it's done through drivers like ASIO. How can a PC not be made for playback, if you're using the exact same AD/DA used to record the original instruments? A good DA is not at all hard to find. Get a Apogee Rosetta if you think it will make a difference. DA isn't much of a problem these days anyways, I'm sure most people couldn't hear the difference between a M-Audio, a RMI and an Apogee card.

But, yeah, if the song is made, mixed and mastered for the vinyl, it's quite something. But then again, you can get that uncompressed feel with artists who aren't a part of the mainstream loudness war regardless of medium. Can't get quite the feel of vinyl in any case, though. Together with uncompressed digital, it's the perfect format. A superiour physical medium, and also a warm and brilliant sound. Hopefully the CD will die a silent death, and we'll all be buying vinyl with a memory stick with uncompressed tracks as a bonus.

I think the point of the vinyl is for it's perfection, not imperfection. But I too enjoy the qualities you're talking about with certain types of music.

i have been just yesterday signing all 550 peaces {huh  :o} and the cover looks really nice.
i am especially happy with the graphical prints. as you already know there are free 3 graphical peaces included inside of the cover which you can for example hang on the wall as picture.

moreover i have already listened to  the test press of the vinyl and seems everything sound really fine :D
we are anticipating the shipping of the vinyls from the press plant around the next week!

I was just wondering, since the game will be released on disc in English and it includes the soundtrack + 5 bonus tracks.

These bonus tracks aren't on the vinyl are they?

Anyway will any of these bonus tracks feature the music from "the band", "the wrench-robot with the radio" and the music played where "the angry fan" is?

Because I really love those too! :D Fantastic music, fantastic game!

Preordered the vinyl of course and will definetly buy the game on disc in march.

Guess that's a no then ;) Already checked that tracklist so it seems it will be the same tracks as the downloadable soundtrack I got with the game.

Found the "missing" tracks through another thread though! :D Just love the one with the "Outside Elevator"! Interesting to hear the versions that plays IN the game too. Even in most of them are meant to be looped.

I'm curious if the bonus tracks on the real CD will get the soundtrack treatment aswell. That is not looped and some with a bit more rhythm :)

Just noticed something in the track order on the vinyl. Has anyone else noticed this?
Because it's a bit different from the downloaded soundtrack order.

1. The Bottom (5:30)
2. The Sea (3:54)
3. Clockwise Operetta (3:54)
4. Nanorobot Tune (3:07)
5. The Mezzanine (2:15)
6. By The Wall (5:04)            <------------------- By the Wall?
7. Mr. Handagote (3:17)
8. Gameboy Tune (4:37)
9. The Furnace (2:58)
10. The Black Cap Brotherhood Theme (1:50)
11. The Prison (2:34)
12. The Glasshouse With Butterfly (3:36)
13. The Castle (3:37)
14. The Elevator (3:20)
                                        <--------------------No The End (Prague Radio)?

By The Wall is a bonus track from the free bonus EP. A really good track that I was suprised was left off the original soundtrack.

I noticed that technically there is more music here than can 'comfortablly' fit on 2 sides of vinyl ... unles this is a double it looks like they're squeezing about 27 mins on each side :-\

Title: Re: Machinarium on Vinyl?
Post by: floex on February 25, 2010, 12:32:52 pm
hi, we have been squeezing the vinyl to the maximum, but definitively not on the expense of the quality!!!

that's why we put away the "radio song" and shortened the elevator song (there are not these sounds in the tail of the song).
i put the wall song there because i somehow had feeling it could work there... and there was still space for it. it has something to do with the A, B side for me also....

as for the digital download.
in any way you don't miss any of the mentioned songs, either you get it with the game or with the free bonus EP.
http://machinarium.net/blog/2009/11/22/free-machinarium-soundtrack-bonus-ep/
you also get full package of the music as the part of the vinyl order (the download password is inside of the cover) in mp3 or flac.

the vinyl was pressed (vinyl mastered) in hi quality company in Germany (as i have already mentioned eg. ECM uses their facilities to print their titles), this process (transferring the master to the vinyl record) is very important to achieve the good quality of sound of course so we have been carefully choosing the company for it. btw. we have been also remastering the whole soundtrack because there are different needs for such records. (for example the bass frequencies have to be mono, the hi-end works also different then cd).

i have been already checking the test press and everything sounds good! the speed is of course 33rpm as it is LP.

hope it clarifies everything!

all the best

tomas

Thanks for the clarification of everything Tomas! :)

I'm really happy that By The Wall is on the vinyl because it's one of the most beautiful tracks in machinarium.

It's nice to see that you've really put an effort in making the vinyl really good quality. Much appreciated! :D

I am so very much looking forward to listening to it when I get my copy! :)

Thank you for making such wonderful music to such a wonderful game!

Machinarium is really a great piece of art!

Ahh ok then, didnt see that. Yeah that's good you're keeping quality in mind.

Also very interesting about the low frequencies having to be in mono. I've just started to study audio/sound engineering so i'll have to ask my teachers about this.

I've been wondering if something I read on the Amanita Blog was true regarding the Yellow vs. Black vinyl prints of the LP...
Someone (http://machinarium.net/blog/2010/01/11/machinarium-soundtrack-vinyl-edition/comment-page-1/#comment-4149) on the blog wrote that "Black vinyl generally sounds better."

Is this true?  (and does it, ultimately, really matter??)  ???

Title: Re: Machinarium on Vinyl?

To extreme audiophiles, yeah it probably matters, but really I don't know. They say coloured vinyl generates more surface noise than black, and picture vinyl is even worse. (this I can attest to!).

It might be that they cut the LP then colour it yellow afterwards. I'm pretty sure this is what they do with normal picture vinyls.

Vinyl itself is not colored, plastic is almost transparent... Usually they mix color (instead of carbon black) to pvc before pressing the record.
I am pretty sure the clear yellow record is semi-translucent :)

To those wondering, yes a Black Vinyl would technically sound "better" in that the material would last longer and deteriorate slower than plastic. However, I personally think anyone who bought the Vinyl to listen to it is really fooling themselves. It's a novelty collectors item, a very high quality one at that, but you get FLAC and 320kbps mp3 of the songs too with the vinyl, so anyone who bought the vinyl "because it sounds better" is a music snob just looking for a trend that isn't there. True "Audiophiles", who spend hundreds to thousands on gold plated cables or stereos with twenty different dials who can "hear the difference" are just sickening. That isn't a music lover, that's a noise critic with a large ego.

Back on the topic however, I got my yellow Vinyl in the post today and will be happily enjoying the songs on my iPod :) Great packaging, sleeve, brilliant looking vinyl and cool art cards. Well worth the money.

oldmeme, I can see only one random blog poster stating he chose the black one, so about the audiophiles/sound freaks, well I guess we can just let them be.

I bought the black vinyl because the clear yellow vinyl was sold out :)
BTW to those wondering, it's not vinyl vs "plastic", it is the same material, PVC aka vinyl.

Anyway, I dont think I'm going to play it more than once, just can't wait to have it here :) .

I was really curious about this myself, so I'd asked my younger brother who works at the semi-famous record store Vintage Vinyl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vintage_Vinyl) whether or not a translucent and/or colored record would sound any worse than a regular black record.
Quoted below is his response, which was interesting to say the least...

"Are blue cotton underpants better than red cotton underpants?
Vinyl is vinyl. period. Colored, Picture discs, it's all vinyl, and it all sounds the same.
Records nowadays are being pressed in "180 gram virgin vinyl."  All that means is that they're heavier. Do they sound better? Once again, it becomes a question of what are you listening to it ON? One person's stereo is going to sound better than somebody listening to a record on a Walgreen's one-speaker turntable.

Colored vinyl/picture discs are more sought-after because usually they are printed in lesser quantities, making them more desirable to collectors.
But as I said, all vinyl, regardless of color, sounds the same."

I'll be receiving the black one in the mail soon enough. Yeah, the translucent yellow one was already sold out when I'd finally gotten around to placing my order, but I hadn't really cared for its look anyway. If you ask me, regular old black vinyl is a much better and more appropriate fit for the game; translucent yellow vinyl doesn't exactly help to convey the image of a shabby and dusty vintage record. Just my two cents. =o)

Hmm. I bet you wouldn't say so if you could grab a yellow one.

Still, I kind of agree with you (since I couldn't either)  :P

Just kidding :)

To make it really fit it would have to come covered in dust, with a few scratches already in place  ;)

And you'd have to play it on an imperfect machine.

Upon my knowledge, at Staalplaat they still have 3 copies left (black vinyl), however, the album is not yet listed on their site. Simply, do let them know and they will confirm the selling price.

Hi,

When you say the reissue has a "different color on the rear side of the jacket" do you mean the olive-coloured part on the back with the track list and other information? Is the rest of the artwork on the covers and art cards the same as previously?

Thanks.

Hello,

exactly, the olive-coloured part has been changed to brown coloured while the rest remains the same, and the total number of copies also changes to 245. To sum it up, the rest of the artwork is the same including three art inserts.

best,

Daniel

Minority Records proudly presents brand-new edition of Floex's (Tomas Dvorak) 14-song soundtrack to the Machinarium point-and-click adventure game by Amanita Design. The 5th edition is the very first edition on 180 gram vinyl, as always pressed on high-quality vinyl by Pallas in Germany. In addition, as many of you asked for in the past, this album is again available on coloured vinyl - on clear orange vinyl, to be exact.

This new edition as all the previous ones contain three 29 x 18 cm art reproductions by Adolf Lachman, but for the first time contain 30 x 30 cm full coloured inlay instead of printed inner sleeve (in order to keep vinyl protected in polylined inner sleeve) and features a coupon with a code to download FLAC only version of the album.

Also, all orders placed at Minority Records online store http://store.minorityrecords.com receives immediate album download option in FLAC, ALAC and MP3 formats and LP is sent out your way via airmail either the same or the next day (applies to working days).

Thank you for your support this year and I wish you all merry Christmas time and happy New year!

Daniel Dudarec
