Title: Movies that catch the atmosphere of amanita design games?
Post by: verticalcity on September 23, 2009, 04:46:28 pm
As we have spare time before the release... what movies would you suggest? ;)
I'll start with one:
Stalker, in the low colored scenes.

I've never seen Stalker, but it does look pretty cool.

The animations are a lot like Shawn Tan, who's currently making a short film based on one of his books called 'The Lost Thing' (not to be released until May :'().

I can see the atmosphere being similar though.

If pictures are frowned upon please say and I'll remove it.

This really looks nice, can you maybe give me a link to finde the movie or the Directors work on www.imdb.com ? I wasn't able to find it.

IMDB hasn't picked up on him yet, but there's a "Shaun Tan" Wikipedia entry:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaun_Tan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaun_Tan)
and his home page: http://www.shauntan.net/ (http://www.shauntan.net/)

As for posting pictures (and that was an especially lovely one, divit), JD's a mellow guy about that it seems 'cause he hasn't complained about a single one yet.  (besides, we're all about "visuals" here)   ;)

It's the first film he's done - most of his work so far has been in comic/picture books - so he isn't there (even when I spell his name right).

There's a website for it at http://www.thelostthing.com/

More info at http://www.shauntan.net/film1.html

And an interview with Shaun Tan (with some early unfinished clips) at http://www.inframe.tv/filmProject.aspx?id=10

I have only played Machinarium's demo. But seriously, it resembles so much Howl's Moving Castle done by Studio Ghibli (anime).

Perhaps a bit darker than the Machinarium one, but the town can remind the one of The City of Lost Children (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_City_of_Lost_Children) with metallic stairs & copper atmosphere (but not any robots). :)

And the way that the city is compressed and high in the middle of nowhere, with an only thin tower, wider at its top, remind me the castle in Le Roi et l'oiseau (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Roi_et_l%27oiseau) :

Inside, there is a lot of stairs, and a metallic rocket-shaped elevator :

 :)

(By the way, 9 is not a Tim Burton movie ;))

Right.  He was one of the producers, but his name keeps getting top billing to help promote 9 (http://www.chucksanimeshrine.com/animeblog/uploaded_images/9_movie_poster-773086.jpg).  (me, I'm still trying to figure out what it means for a film to be "so so american" ;-)

ehehe i didn't actually educate myself much about this movie, the reason why i watched that trailer was, that it came as related videos after machinarium preview :p so i just found tim burtons name there.. looks a bit similar thing then to machinarium boxed german version :p

well yes so so american ment actually so so hollywood mainstream, made according to the list of rules on the studio wall. i am sorry for using the whole continent name referring to that little bit of it :) living far from the subject people tend to act like this i believe. hm..

and then i am sorry for case if the film isnt actually using more rules from the studio wall that i saw in trailer, but then again - trailers are ment for people to create an idea about the film/movie itself

Nice, some movies here I haven't checked out yet, but I surely will!

Here's 4 awesome movies I'd suggest you watch;

The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mysterious_Geographic_Explorations_of_Jasper_Morello (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mysterious_Geographic_Explorations_of_Jasper_Morello)
Already been mentioned on this forum, but it deserves its place here  :P

Steamboy : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steamboy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steamboy)
An animated film about the use and misuse of steam power & bizarre inventions

Coraline: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0327597/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0327597/)
A recent film made by the people who did Nightmare Before Christmas, very quirky and organic

City of Ember: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0970411/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0970411/)
Awesome movie about a city sealed away underground, and the quest to find a way out

Enjoy!  ;D (I Did!)

Some nice tips came out of this already! I'll try to track down "The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello" for sure, it looks amazing.
And yes, studio ghibli, especially Miyazaki's work is kind of great animation.
i'll drop some more:
Tim Burton's "Vincent": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084868/
Chris Marker's "La Jetee": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056119/

Two nice shorts that I deeply enjoyed. :)

talking about comic books, you might wanna check out Eric Liberge Mr Mardi-Gras Descendres or the Dave Cooper stuff (both for mature readers)

talking about movies, I find the movies of Yuriy Norshteyn to resemble the Amanita Design (, well,) design, his most famous short film is Yozhik v tumane (hedgehog in the fog) and can be found on the internet (for instance in one of the Beltesassar's short animation festival torrents, there are several)

same goes to the work of The Blackheart Gang, which can be watched here - http://theblackheartgang.com, you also gotta look at The Household, where their most famous film "The Tale of How" is posted - http://theblackheartgang.com/the-household/the-tale-of-how/

the Piotr Kamler movies, which are not easy to get

also some movies by Raoul Servais, like Sirene or his not-as-good-as-the-short-films feature lenght movie Taxandria

also the short movie 9, on which the long one is based is somewhere out there in the net, though that's the worst from all listed here

maybe I'll think of some other. Good luck finding these.

Hello fellow Amanita fans,

This post may seem weird or awkward to some, but I'd really like to bring out the old 1980's "fuzzy felt" Moomins animated children's series as an example of a visual media with an Amanita'ish atmosphere and feel.

Don't let the term "children's" confuse you, the 100 five-minute episodes include scaly monsters, giant squids, killer sea serpents, and in my favurite episodes we meet disturbingly scary apparitions like the Groke, a cold ghostlike figure that roams the land in wintertime, and the Lady of the Cold which may freeze the inhabitants of Moomin Vally to death by looking them into their eyes - and indeed does so to a poor squirrell. To this day I still remember that one scene where the little woodland critter dies, it really traumatized me :-)

Here's some video material to watch while waiting for christmas. Fuzzy felt moomins official page:

Watch all 100 episodes i a sadly *very* small window:
