Title: Savegame B.S. [MAC]
Post by: Frusty on March 24, 2012, 11:57:42 am
This is pretty ridiculous. Payed money for this lovely game but I feel like having to be a near computer expert to play it. I'd like to have my money back but since that probably isn't possible, I'll settle for a working solution. Apparently that's (still) too hard to come by.
I'm running the game on a MacBook 2.1 - Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16Ghz - 2 GB RAM and OSX 10.5.8.

I learned where to find the .sol-files, stretched the Flash-info storage slider to maximum, UNchecked Flashplayer in CCleaner-settings but all this with no effect whatsoever.

So what's the secret? Biggest puzzle is to let the game save as it should but that isn't what i payed 10 bucks for to solve. And I don't feel like moving .sol files back and forth because the game is simply not working right. And again, I paid MONEY!

So pretty please with sugar on top.. How to fix this?

Ok I think I found a solution. After quitting the game, running CCleaner and rebooting, my savegames were stil available when I restarted the game.

What did I do;
In CCleaner under Applications there's a box 'Application Cache'. After I've UNchecked that box, the savegames apparently didn't get lost/thrown away or whatever..

I'll try again later today. Seems to be working for now.

I agree with you about how aggravating it can become - quoting you: "like having to be a near computer expert" just to have some fun on your computer.  But when you visit us again (if the need should arise) I would appreciate if you'd tone down your language.  There are kids that check in here and it would be nice to keep this place a safe haven for chatter about the work that Amanita Design is doing instead of a wall for people to throw their #^*%@ on until they figure out what they're doing.

Thanks for your understanding.

*toned down* :-X

Owell, accepting my ten bucks loss and checking Pirate Bay first next time.

Um, yeah, you definitely toned it down. (I saw your post before you edited it.) =op

One thing to say right off the bat in response to your original post is that Alex is not a member of Amanita Design. Neither am I...we're just forum moderators.

And yes, I agree that it's frustrating to lose your progress. I dunno...I have a Mac too, and I'd only lost my saves once after clearing Safari's cache. IMO, saving issues just seem par for the course with Flash games. I know, for example, that Edmund McMillen had similar problems with The Binding of Isaac.

Much appreciated!  ( not everyone that goes into a rant has the courtesy to come back and chill it down )  But my friend, Lamkin, already said what I wanted to start off with: Namely that i and the other moderators here are fans of Amanita Design's work and NOT on the development team.  We are just working through problems as they come along from the User's Perspective ( a perfect example is my recent conversation (http://amanita-design.net/forum/index.php/topic,3631.0.html) with my new friend sausy ~ who i hope is well on his way to playing Questionaut with his granddaughter!   ;)  )

Keep in mind, Frusty, that Machinarium was released in October of 2009.  Who knew then that CCleaner would eat the saved games file?!  And now we've figured out that IE9 is deleting saved games without user consent.  Then we also discovered that Firefox has a "better privacy" add-on that's killing saved games...  And that's just on the Windows OS!  The list of solutions and workarounds is getting longer all the time and we're doing what we can to provide fixes and suggestions as we learn more.

So either please join in and post the results of your saved game discoveries on the MAC platform or...
edit
o.k., it's my turn now to tone it down.  Sorry.  But do please chime back in if and when you find out what's killing your saves.  Meanwhile, the "Lost Saved Games" section of the forum will continue to evolve as we learn more about how to stop it from happening across platforms.
