Title: Ubuntu Linux slow down & crashes
Post by: Ezekiel000 on October 28, 2009, 08:00:06 pm
I've found that in all screens after you loose your umbrella the cursor slows down when showing action pointers (e.g. walking) and will then bungee to where it should be.
I also had both the board game in the tavern and the wire puzzle in the lamp post crash the game, this is the error I got from the lamp post crash:
./machinarium: line 3:  7284 Segmentation fault      ./Machinarium
Will there be an update to fix these issues? Is there a mailing list I can sign up for to be notified when updates or patches are released?

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 amd64

I'm not on 64bit system, but for the slowness try to turn fullscreen mode off.

PS: they say "only for 32bit systems", but a friend of mine runs the game on 64bit platform too.

I have run it windowed, it reduces the amount of cursor slow down but the crashes seem to have gotten worse since I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10. Before it only crashed during puzzles, now it also crashed when on the screen with the band.

You have the IA32-libs package installed? I don't think this would be the problem since you can start the game but it may be worth a shot.

On an offtopic note: Is your username inspired by Ctrl+Alt+Del's Xbox robot?  :)

Yeah I've got the 32bit libs installed as I run quite a few 32bit apps.

Off topic: My screen name was actually taken from one of the Dark Angels characters from Warhammer 40k when I was into that and it's just stuck a bit better than my old standard user name nights000 which came from NiGHTS into Dreams.  :) But thanks for reminding me of Ctrl+Alt+Del I haven't read that in ages.

Ah ok, don't know much of the warhammer universe.

I found this HOWTO: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=789578
Follow instructions in Part A to see if it fixes the issue.

EDIT: Other hints:
Install the "Curl" (libcurl) package if it's not already done and see if it helps.
Install "NSS" Package if not done.

I'll have a go at that guide tomorrow.
I've already got bot 32 & 64 bit nss.
But not curl, why would curl make a difference? For that matter why would nss make a difference?
Aren't they networking stuff?

I read that here:

not sure if it will help but it seems to be a requirement.

Thanks for the guide and links, unfortunately it still crashed quite often but I still managed to complete the game saving a total of 79 times :) (I saved as I entered each room just encase it crashed)
Excelent game, hopefully when I come back to play it in the future there will be a patch or 64bit version.
Is the reason that there isn't a 64bit version that the adobe flash player 64bit is still beta?

http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html

There's no projector for 64bit Linux yet but it seems to be worked on
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/64bit.html

I don't think the devs can do much about it, only Adobe could possibly fix this.

Oh right I assumed that the projector and the plugin would have been developed at the same time.
Well when it's finished in the future I hope Amanita Design will provide a patch to upgrade the 32bit version.

You could also be adventurous enough and run the game in a browser  ::)

How?

How?

By extracting the swf from the executable. But I will not go into too much details...

Oh right I didn't realise that that was possible.
