Title: Soundtrack
Post by: iLexor on October 16, 2009, 04:58:30 pm
I justed want to say, that I really like the soundtrack of this game. I also like the game very much and I played for a while now. Long enough to cross the path of the robot band. I helped them with their instruments and the began to play. I just thought that is some great stuff they are playing and I will listen to that on the soundtrack. Suddenly I was very dissapointed, because this song isn't on the soundtrack and I really can't understand why.  :'(
Anybody else dissapointed? Can someone tell me, why this song isn't on the soundtrack? Anyway we can get it?  ???

I think it's no big secret to tell you that the files in C:\Program Files\Machinarium\11\ (by default) are actually .mp3 audio files. Just drag&drop them into Winamp to play. You can also change their extension from .000/.001 to .mp3 if you wish but this step isn't necessary.
Didn't have time to play the game yet but I'm pretty sure you'll find the track you're looking for among those files. Let me know if you need any more help.

as soon as i got the band to play their tune i loaded up itunes to play that track and was also saddened that it was not among the soundtrack files.

hi, actually i supposed some reaction like that :)
however when i was solving compilation of songs for the soundtrack, i found out that i can't put all the music there.
primary because i had feeling that some songs disturb flow of the music... for me it was  important to put together such selection of songs and in such order that you could really enjoy to listen to the soundtrack from the beginning to the end. that the soundtrack is well balanced...
these songs just didn't fit, they put different mood, or destroyed the "flow" of the listening, then it was better for me to omit them.
anyway it will be possible to get them somehow... soon or later, when the server is not so overloaded...
my idea is to put them as free bonus download from the blog...

thx for the info. i thought so anyway, nonetheless i was dissapointed about the song missing, even if the rest is also great. the flow of the music is there without doubt and you're right, the mood on the robot band song is a different, but that's the reason i like it so much.
However, looking forward to the release of the missing song(s) and thx for such a great game and soundtrack.  ;D

I understand those who bought the game direct from the website got the soundtrack in mp3 format as well ...? I bought it on steam, and I know all the songs are there in the game folder, but I was wondering is it possible to get the tracklist of the "offical" soundtrack so I can make a playlist with them in the "correct" order?

Look forward to hear them.

Hey, Tomas. Can you describe a bit your creative process? What instruments and computer software do you use to compose and arrange your music? I am quite intrigued.

Regards.

I too bought the game on steam, as did Steedus, and I am entirely unable to locate the soundtrack. Does the soundtrack not come with the steam version? Any help would be appreciated.

UPDATE: The Machinarium soundtrack is now available on STEAM (http://store.steampowered.com/app/40703/?snr=1_7_7_151_150_1)<-link

So we have to buy it? ... hmm  :-\

Don't get me wrong, i'd pay money to get a physical CD copy, but if it's just mp3's i think i can make do with the files extracted from the game.

The thing is, that the songs are not totally the same comparing the music in game and the "standalone soundtrack". I have spent some extra time, to make the music work right on its own. Starting with simple stupid fact, that songs in game work as loop, but here it should be something what starts and ends.  Some songs don't differ in arrange and some do...  Mainly i was trying to add more rhythm, often there is little bit  different mix trying to make them more dynamical (which is actually something superfluous in game). . Also the whole soundtrack was professionally mastered in very good studio here in prague, we used some cool analogue equipment to make it sound right :).

Ahh ok, well if you've reworked it into more of a normal format that's cool. Still wish I had known about thi before I bought the game through Steam though ... oh well.

As I listened to the ingame sound files I recognized that the soundtrack songs are different. Some "instruments" are louder and more developed. Will it be the same with the bonus songs? Or do you just put the ingame versions out?

How do you convert the '000' files into mp3 files?

Title: Re: Soundtrack
Post by: ivi on October 20, 2009, 04:18:33 pm
Pretty much the same way as you'd "convert" .jpeg files to .jpg - by changing the extension ;D

How do you convert the '000' files into mp3 files?

First thing I'd do is make copies of the .000, .001, .002... files in a separate folder.  Then... quoting from
Re: Soundtrack (http://machinarium.net/forum/index.php/topic,339.msg1657.html#msg1657) "...You can also change their extension from .000/.001 to .mp3 if you wish..."

And, like ivi said, just rename them!  Your computer will warn you that doing so "may" cause them to become unstable, but you know what they are (.000, .001, etc.) and what you want them to be (mp3s) so you'll be fine.   :)

Alternatively you can use the Windows command prompt. For XP Start > Run "cmd"; For Vista, 7 type in the search form of your Start Menu "cmd" and hit enter.
Voyage to your folder containing COPIES of the files in the "11" folder with "cd" or "D:" to get to another drive(change letter accordingly), finally type in "ren *.* *.mp3" and hit enter. All are renamed :)

Great!
320 kb/s, huh? I wonder why we only got the 256 kb/s encoded MP3s  ::)  :P
I would love some FLACs though I will most likely get the box with CD Soundtrack.

Title: Re: Soundtrack
Post by: floex on October 21, 2009, 09:45:28 pm
hi,

i don't think there is difference really, and i am very sensitive to this matter :). i would keep the same quality - 256 but the shop doesn't  allow me to do so... it is standard quality for "ithinkmusic" and that's the only reason.
actually i was little bit annoyed because i had to re-encode and re-tag the whole soundtrack  ;D

it is possible to buy cd with the boxed version of the game. it is of course the highest quality.

flac: it would be theoretically possible to sell flac, but then i think it could cause some complains by the people who get the music with the game where is not flac included. so i think it is fair like this!

i really think the quality of the mp3s is very high. i am the first who would take care if not!
the important think is:  there is difference between ingame music and the standalone soundtrack...
in rearrangement / mix / mastering and also quality (flash allows only 160kbs)
in other words it is not going to be the same experience as if you listen to the renamed songs from the game!

I understand. It's just that while being widespread, the format is showing its age. In the category of Lossy encoding Ogg Vorbis and AAC are far superior music compressors.
I'm not buying lossy encoded music over the web while I can get best quality audio in my local store for the same price, if not less.
Just my point of view ;)

I do not want to accuse you Tomas Flo  in parody or plagiary,
but I thought somewhere I had heard that something like this,
and honestly these soundtracks resembles the old well-forgotten -
The Irresistible Force - It's Tomorrow Already, Ninja Tune 1998

I know Irresistible Force and it has only two things common with Floexes work, it's electronic and it's ambient. You're an annoying little prick.

Title: Re: Soundtrack

There's a famous quote that goes, "Music has charms to soothe the savage breast (http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/252000.html)".

But it's also true that Music has charms to... start name calling and flame wars (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=flame%20war) on discussion forums!   ;) ;D

Let's please stay cool and avoid that around here.  English is not Ulyasha's first language, I doubt he purposely meant to say that Floex ripped off The Irresistible Force (http://www.amazon.com/Its-Tomorrow-Already-Irresistible-Force/dp/B00000BIL0).  Just that he was reminded of them by Floex's Machinarium soundtrack.

Что точно вы спрашиваете, и от кого?

Please post your reply and specific question in English (or Czech ;))
Пожалуйста вывесьте ваши ответ и специфический вопрос в английском.

Tomas: Thank you very much for the music from this game. In many games you can tell the music was added as an after-thought and does not contribute to the game in a meaningful way, but I feel like Machinarium wouldn't be the same game without the incredible atmosphere, ambience and emotion evoked by the soundtrack. I for one will be waiting patiently to buy any sequels or new games from Amanita design and your music is a very big part of that.

Thank you.

Greetings from Norway!

What a great game!

Still havent finished it, but i just had to drop by and show my support and appreciation.

The game visuals kinda reminded me of the intro to the Anime Laputa Castle in the Sky for some reason  :)

As for the soundtrack : it instantly set the mood for the game, and the track "The Bottom" has been added to my list of best game music ever!

Getting the soundtrack as download with the game purchase was great initiative and gamemusic lovers like me wont have to scour the interwebs in search for it, you have my eternal gratitude.

Thank you Tomas and the rest of the Amanita crew!

Keep up the good work  ;D

Isn't that the last one on the soundtrack?
It starts with fuzz from the square outside, but leave it for about 40 seconds and your in the bar.
