Hello fellow Amanita fans,

I'm Huib, 27 years old sciences of the arts student from the Netherlands. I bought both Machinarium and Botanicula quite a while ago, but for some reason I never got to actually play them. Last week I decided to try Botanicula and I immediately fell in love with the game. I think the illustrations are just great and with the sound and music added the game is just perfect. I love the way in which certain creatures give information without ever using any words. I finished Botanicula in just 2 sessions and I'm currently enjoying Machinarium. Keep up the good work, Amanita!

What I really wanted to talk about:
For my master's thesis I'm conducting some research on the socialisation of video gaming. With for example reading or watching tv (or going to the cinema or theatre, really about everything that has to do with culture) parents are a main factor in forming the cultural preferences and behaviour of a person. If parents read a lot of literary books or encourage their children to read literary books instead of comics, the children tend to keep doing this, even as adults.

With video games there's a problem: how can parents be a main factor if they've never played games themselves? Games have only emerged on a large scale in the seventies, so the parents of many people (including myself) have never seen a video game until their children started playing them. With my thesis I'm trying to map out the socialising factors of video gaming, if parents are indeed a less important factor.

For data collection I have set up an online survey, and I would like to ask you to fill it out and maybe even share it with your friends. Every single person filling it out helps.

The survey is located at Videogameresearch.nl.

Filling it out takes about 15 minutes and as a thank you I have decided to give away some games. The survey will be available until May 14th. Please take note that it's about VIDEO games, not board games or card games.

About data usage and your privacy:
I don't want to know your name, address or any other personal information. The survey does log your IP address, but only to offer me some means to check if people have been filling it out more than once. Your IP will not be exported to my statistics software.
The only people with access to the data themselves are the professor supervising my thesis and myself. The data will just be used for statistical analysis.
If you decide you would like to have a chance of winning a game you will be asked to enter your e-mail address. This will be stored in a separate database that does not log your IP or date and time of entry. This way your e-mail address cannot be linked to the answers you gave, to make it as anonymous as possible.

And woops, my post turned out to be a little longer than I was expecting. Thank you for reading this and just reply if you have any more questions.

Thank you :)By the way: I just finished Machinarium. I think the puzzle which gives you the extension cord was ridiculously difficult, but in the end I managed to complete it. More luck than skill though. I do wonder where those two evil robots come from.

Quoting from Huib's page (all references to "here" are meant to mean his page):

"Survey has closed!
This survey is complete. Thanks to everyone who participated! More information regarding the conclusions of the research will be published here as it becomes available.
The drawing to determine the winners of the prizes will be performed soon. More information regarding the process will appear here as soon as possible."

Sigh, I was pretty sure I mentioned the end date in my first post, but apparently not. Sorry about that.
But yeah, I closed the survey last tuesday. Everybody who has won a game should be getting an e-mail today or tomorrow.

I will start posting results here as soon as I have any.

I hope so too Smiley I finished the draft version last week, but not ready yet to publish any results. The professor that was supervising my thesis had to quit because of a burnout. The professor that was willing to take over hasn't had much time to really read anything, so so far I never got any feedback on the second half. I'm expecting to graduate in August, and I will post results here, don't worry Smiley.
