Stuck at the gate, d'oh!

Ok, seems I'm stupid ...

I'm stuck at the second screen, the one with the gate to the city. I've got my blue 'hat' on but when I pull the thingie to call the guard, the guard still refuses to let me in. Seems I need the light bulb from the lamp nearby. But how do I get it?? I can climb the lamp post a little but I can't do anything there ... ?

see if you can do anything to the ladder rungs below you when you climb up the lamp.

as a general rule, when you are stumped, try clicking on everything you can think of to see if something happens.

d'oh, stupid me! of course! take the lower rungs and put them above ...

Is it really that much easier to post a thread in this forum than check out the in-game walkthrough?  

Seriously, if you can't be bothered by shooting a couple of spiders, all the walkthrough pages can be found online.
