I just wanted to chime in and say that I can not use the keyboard when playing this game and using the mouse makes it much more difficult for some reason.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas to if there was a way to make the keyboard work while playing this mini game?

This appears to be a limitation of the Linux build and has already been mentioned on the forum, here:

Sorry to tell you that no solution has as yet been given and it is unknown whether a fix is in the works.
