I tried your solution, but my board never looks like your pictures. The computer puts pieces in many different spots. Even the first screen shot is not what comes up in my game version. Just letting you know.

Well, it's been mentioned that the solution will not work on the Android or iOS version, but it should always work on the PC version. Perhaps what's confusing is that...yes, the computer will place its first piece in different spots on that grid, but it will still begin to follow the pattern regardless as long as you place your first piece directly above its first piece; your second piece to the immediate left of its first piece, etc. Hope that makes sense.
