Using Items in Inventory

THis seems simple, but I can pick up items and the robot eats them putting them in inventory. I have problems getting them out of the robot and into play. I know what I want to do with them, but I'm having problems getting them out of the robot.

Do I drag and drop them on the robot's head?
Drag and drop the item where I want to use it?
Click on the item and click on the robot?
Click on the item and click on where I want to use it?

I've had success randomly and have tried all 4 of these things and can't figure out how to consistently use the items in inventory.

I feel stupid, but it still isn't working for me.

No need to feel stupid. :) I could see how it might be a little confusing.
On any screen, you'll see a white star in the upper right-hand corner. Tap that once and your inventory will be revealed along the top left of the screen. But it seems like you know that part, so...from that point you will want to drag the item you want to use and drop it where you want to use it. So yeah, number two of the four things you tried. :)

I to am having an awful job try to get the robot to us the sucker gun
to catch the dog. The dog is there lapping up the oil,the robot is
there in time to shoot at the dog, but when I drag the gun to shoot
at the dog, robot will not pick up the gun. I have fed the robot first as well
but no way will he take the gun. I am playing the game on an iPhone 6s.

Perhaps you are dragging the gun to the robot? You need to drag and drop it on the dog.
